Reasons To Consider An All-Girls Catholic High School For Non-Catholic Teenagers

by Laurie Ramirez

Parents who are interested in sending their teenage daughters to a Christian school may discover an intriguing all-girls Catholic school. If the family doesn't follow the Roman Catholic religion, they'll immediately wonder whether students from outside that denomination are accepted. Although the numbers vary by institution, many students attending Catholic schools are not part of this denomination.

Two Advantages

Moms and dads find several reasons to prefer Catholic schools over public educational institutions.

On average, the student-to-teacher ratio in Catholic schools is 12 to 1. Small class sizes have important benefits, allowing for more personalized attention. The teacher has better control over the behavior of the class in general. If the public education options for the girls have substantially larger class sizes, this factor is especially appealing.

Parents can figure out the ratio for the school they are considering with some simple division. For example, the ratio for a high school with 180 pupils and 15 teachers is 12 to 1. That's determined by dividing 180 by 15.

Emphasis on Conservative Morals

Christian families also appreciate the support for the conservative morals that are emphasized in their faith. In a public setting, there is no focus on God in the various subjects. Teachers of health classes might discuss sexuality without stressing the importance of abstinence. A Catholic educational curriculum addresses sex as an aspect of marriage.

The teenagers are expected to treat each other and their teachers with respect. Their behavior and attitude should reflect Christian ethics.

Relevant Statistics

These schools are the most popular choices among all types of private elementary and secondary schools. Of all the categories, 36 percent of private school students attend Catholic educational institutions.

Nationwide, about 18 to 19 percent of students attending Catholic schools are not members of this denomination. With 180 pupils, that would be about 34 student. The percentage tends to be much higher in urban settings.

Getting Started

Parents can start by contacting the school or looking over the school's website to learn whether non-Catholic individuals are welcome to apply. They also should feel free to ask how many students are not Catholic. If the school's numbers are similar to or higher than the nationwide numbers, your children will feel included. If the opportunity appears to be a positive one, filling out an application for enrollment is the next step. After acceptance, the girls will be able to begin a fulfilling educational experience.
